Nissan Rogue: The Detour

This was one of my first projects as a Tech Lead, and surely, I was far from being ready for what we had to build at that time. During times when HTML5, three.js, and canvas were new to everyone, and there was a lack of documentation and community, we managed to build one of the most advanced experiences ever.

The Detour is an interactive driving adventure built inside Google Maps and Street View, in support of the ongoing rollout of the all-new 2014 Nissan Rogue SUV.

Picking locations from A to B, the user was able to see a simulation of a new Nissan driving on real-life streets, with all building reflections along the path. The simulation was supported by bespoke keyframe animations and a genius M.I.A. soundtrack. It was the first time we hit the limits of HTML5 and moved optimization techniques to another level.
